I was debating between getting an ipad or a kindle and now after using both I would have to go with the Kindle. Primarily I am using this as a reader and not as an entertainment device. The contrast on the Kindle is great making it very easy to read and a few people have complained about the size of the DX, but me personally I like the size of it very close to a newpaper in size. The final persuasion for me was the free 3G where as an Ipad is $30 a month and plus it's on the ATT newtwork so most likely will work half the time at best. Great product only issue is that sometimes it is a little slow changing pages and the search is not that refined

Well, most reviewers have past experiences with previous generations of Kindles, but the newest Kindle DX Graphite model was my first Kindle. I've always been a reader, but I wouldn't read so many books that I was really in need of something like an E-Book, so therefore, I was never really interested before. But eventually the thought of having a thing the size of a book hold thousands really made me make my decision about owning one. I won't say that this review will be what you feel, since it's my review and therefore a bit opinionated, but it's not a hugely biased review, it's just put into perspective of me. But I do hope this review helps others out there, who are not big readers, but have just about run out of space to hold anymore books.
When I first got the DX, I was surprised by it. I never had a E-reader before, so seeing the screen really was different. If you really want that feel that you're reading a book, this is it! However, once the look of the screen and the glamour of you actually owning a kindle leaves, you'll feel like it's more of an E-Reader, than a book. I'm not sure how much that matters when reading a book, but every so often I remember I'm not reading on a physical page, but a device designed to make you feel like you are reading on one. It's sorta feels like I betrayed the physical book I once knew and loved, but the space I save with this Kindle, and depending on the book, the price, I don't mind that much.
Although I never owned a previous Kindle, I hear a lot of complaints about the new way the buttons are placed. The letter keys are below the screen and everything else is on the right. In my opinion, I like it this way. Since the buttons are all on the right side, you only need to use one hand, which is easier than trying to use two while holding it at the same time. People have said that it felt cluttered, and while I've mispressed a button once or twice, it's not that hard to handle since the place where I keep my right hand positioned is right below the next page button. I feel they really designed it for people to only need one hand to use it comfortably and still be able to use the book cover they sell it with. I don't know about you, but when I read, I have the cover open and not turned so that my cover is opened like a book and because of the way I have it, having buttons on the left would really make me have to move my positions of my hands and it would become more of a chore to change pages rather than just a press of a button.
Now I'm gonna take a better look at the screen. It's nice and has the look of a book page, but like all screens, it has the issue of glare. I would definitely say that it's not as bad as an iPad, and can easily be used outside with little glare issues, but at night when I do most of my reading, I use a light I purchased, and while it is effective, it really matters the placement of the light, the kindle, my sitting position and how my angle from my eyes to the kindle. It's not a huge problem, but annoying, since you can move a fraction of an inch and suddenly need to change almost everything to get back to where you were before. Like I said, it's not a huge problem, but it could eventually get annoying.
One thing I noticed while experimenting with my Kindle is that is has a web browser. But calling it basic would be an over-statement. It really can't do much, so virtually all websites are useless on it. Wikipedia works the best, so I feel like that's what the browser was designed for. But if you really want a web browser with a E-Reader, buy an iPad, not a Kindle....At least, not this generation Kindle...
Another thing that wasn't really an issue, but annoyed me, was the page numberings. They're not really page numbers but in fact the number of lines on each screen. You'll get used to it eventually, but it would have been nice to be able to change it from 2184-2234 to just Pg 136.
Over all the DX is great! It is light and manueverable and doesn't really take up much space. It's about the same size as a standard Composition Notebook, but a little less thick. It holds many books and is something that can be transported easily. It won't fit in your pocket, but then again, not many books can fit into a pocket anyway. It offers a 3G wireless network for you to purchase any book available on Kindle anywhere in the world basically. It holds a very good charge. I've only charged it twice the entire month I've had it, compared to my iPod, which I have to charge twice a week! I hear the estimates are 1 week with wireless, 2 weeks without. This sounds like a good estimate and is probably the most accurate. The Kindle is a great device, unless you want more that just to read books. I'd also suggest to get the smaller Kindle version. Although it's nice to have a larger size, and the larger memory is cool, odds are you'll never even reach memory capacity of the smaller Kindle and the size doesn't really make a huge difference for almost 200 dollars in price. Unless you REALLY want the extra inches, it's not worth it(the size difference, not the Kindle itself).

I have given the Kindle DX Graphite a 5 Star rating.
It's not a perfect device, but to be honest, I knew the weaknesses prior to buying the device. When compared to an Apple iPad, the OS and user interface is really clunky and slow. This type of device should be touch-screen, as it feels like the most natural way to navigate a touchscreen. There's even a Sony E-Reader with a touchscreen, but unfortunately, it doesn't have the same image quality and clarity. The good thing is that the buttons on the side are just as good as the iPad for tasks such as turning pages, and that's half the battle for an e-Reader, isn't it?
I should also mention that I didn't purchase the Kindle DX2 specifically for reading books. I have 2 books loaded onto it (Eating Animals, and Green Metropolis), but reading books was not my main intention for the Kindle DX2. I purchased it to read and store PDFs --- LOTS of PDFs. I read PDFs I downloaded from scientific journals, international protocols that we follow at the hospital (where I work), product manuals, and other work-related documents. My Kindle is brilliant as a storage facility for my documents, since I can't keep 1000 pages of documents with me at all times. Laptops aren't great for reading on-the-go. This will be useful for train trips (I commute to work every day), on vacations, etc.
The Kindle only uses battery power when you change pages, and based on how much information is packed in my PDFs, the Kindle DX2 will probably last me 4-6 weeks before I need to recharge!! With any LCD device, I'd have to worry about battery life during a long reading session. I love how the Kindle is so free of hassles.
The text is clear, and the contrast is good. I have never had an e-Reader before, so perhaps I don't have much to compare to. However, I know what I see, and the Kindle DX's screen is far superior to that of the iPad, Android mobile, iPhone, or any tablet computer or laptop screen for reading documents and books. This is where the Kindle shines, and LCD screens fail.
Unlike LCD screens, the Kindle screen gets better as the amount of light in your environment increases. LCD screens are the opposite, as the screens get worse as the light around you increases. I'm much more likely to read in a lit room than in the dark, so this works out well. After all, I have never looked at a piece of paper and thought it was severely flawed.
The screen is exactly like paper. Really. It's strange to say it, but it's true. The screen is smudge-proof, and I haven't seen any glare whatsoever. I'm sure the Kindle screen would reflect glare if I used it under the wrong lighting situation, but from what I have experienced so far, I would have to intentionally create worst-case-scenario for it to be an issue. I haven't noticed any problems yet.
Anyway, I'm giving this 5 STARS because it's exactly what I was hoping for. Hopefully, in around 2 years, there will be a colour touchscreen version of the eInk screen. A year after that, I hope they create a ~10" version for the DX. Until that time, this is the best reading device on the market.
If I were to rate it compared to my "ideal" eReader, I'd give the Kindle 3.5/5 stars.

I can't say I am entirely happy with my recent purchase because I would like to know amazon was about to release a new version of kindle device after five day of my purchase. If I knew that I would have waited for it. It was a good marketing strategy but I am quite sure I will never buy another e-reader from amazon due to this fact. It is not that good to know that there is a new version of the device you have just purchase that is better and cheaper. I feel like I was fooled.
Of course the kindle is good and was delivered on time but...

I love my Kindle. The bigger screen is great and the ease of use and the instant set-up and purchase arrangements are seamless!! I think the keyboard on the 6" screen model is easier to use but for the amount of times I use it I would choose the extra screen size hands down!! For those of you in Australia concerned about how your Kindle will work locally I haven't had any issues. The only drawback is the books that are available elsewhere but not in Australia due to copyright and other reasons. Can't wait for the database of books for purchase by Aussie residents to grow!!! Everyone needs a Kindle!!
